20,000 Plates Hotchkiss Peaches Given Away at State Fair Sept 22nd
Graded "extra fancy," they were to be presented to President Taft on his visit. When the peaches arrived in Pueblo, Colorado, they were not in good shape, and only 400 boxes were considered suitable to use. Mildred Barlow presented President Taft with a prize box of peaches and told him where they came from. He replied that he would think of Hotchkiss whenever he ate one. During his stroll through the exhibit building, he stopped at the Duke Brother's display and took a bite out of a peach. Delta County had more first prizes that any other county in the state. Fruit displayed was not sold but was instead sent to orphanages.
